Festivals and events, with the notice that dates them

The delta's festivals follow two calendars. The religious and Khmer festivals move with the lunar calendar; the newer city festivals are fixed by a plan published a few weeks ahead. For each one we link the notice that gave its most recent dates.

The calendar at a glance

Dates below are the most recent ones we could confirm from an official notice or a national newspaper. Lunar festivals shift by up to a month from year to year in the solar calendar, so treat a past date as a guide to the season, not to the day.

Via Ba Chua Xu at Sam Mountain

The largest gathering in the delta is the festival of the Lady of the Realm at the foot of Sam Mountain near Chau Doc. UNESCO added it to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 4 December 2024. The An Giang Department of Culture and Sports gives the festival days as the 22nd to the 27th of the 4th lunar month; other reports start on the 23rd. In 2026 the provincial People's Committee opened it on the evening of 6 June at the Sam Mountain National Tourist Area.

Ok Om Bok and the Ghe Ngo races

Ok Om Bok, the Khmer moon festival, falls at the full moon of the 10th lunar month, usually in November. Its main public events are the Ghe Ngo long-boat races and lantern releases. In 2025 the Can Tho edition ran from 3 to 5 November in Phu Loi and Soc Trang wards, with water-lantern shows on the Maspero River. Ao Ba Om in the former Tra Vinh province, now Vinh Long, is the other main venue. The festival and the boat races are national intangible heritage.

Khmer New Year and the bull race

Chol Chnam Thmay, the Khmer New Year, falls in mid-April. Can Tho's 2026 plan, published on its legal information portal on 3 April, set a televised programme for 15 April at Chroi Tum Chas pagoda in My Xuyen ward.

The Bay Nui bull race in An Giang grew out of the Sene Dolta ancestor festival after the harvest, and has been national intangible heritage since 2016. The 30th race took place on 20 September 2025 at Tri Ton with 64 pairs of bulls; the 31st was announced for 10 October 2026 at the race field in An Cu commune.

City festivals with fixed dates

Can Tho runs several events planned by the city: a southern folk cake festival (26 April to 1 May in 2026) and a river culture festival over the New Year (27 December 2025 to 1 January 2026). In Dong Thap, the Sa Dec flower festival has been held twice, both times over the solar New Year, before the Tet flower market. In the former Cai Be district, the Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village festival returns for a 7th edition from 19 to 22 November 2026. These events are announced a few weeks ahead; the provincial tourism portals and the national VNAT site carry the notices.

Don ca tai tu

Don ca tai tu, the amateur chamber music of the south, is not a festival but you will meet it at most of them. UNESCO inscribed it on 5 December 2013; it is practised in 21 provinces. Provinces in the delta hold their own don ca tai tu competitions and festivals, announced on their department sites.

When a festival is a bad time to travel

Festivals bring crowds and can mean busy roads and scarce rooms. The Sam Mountain festival draws millions of visitors, according to the provincial notice; if you want to see the temple rather than the festival, go at another time. Ok Om Bok race days draw crowds to the riverbanks in the host wards. Around Tet, expect heavy demand for transport across the delta, and some family-run places close for the holiday.

Do not plan a trip around a date copied from a previous year or from a tour page. Confirm the year's dates from the provincial notice; the 2026 bull-race notice appeared nine days before the race.
