Dong Thap: Plain of Reeds to My Tho
The new Dong Thap joins the old Dong Thap and Tien Giang provinces, from the Plain of Reeds and Tram Chim to My Tho on the Tien River. Its tourism portal works well and already covers both halves; this page points to the pages that matter and to the sources that fill its gaps.

The new province in one paragraph
Resolution 202/2025/QH15 merged Tien Giang and Dong Thap into one province named Dong Thap, with 5,938.64 km² and 4,370,046 people. A draft merger plan reported in April 2025 put the provincial administrative centre in My Tho, the former Tien Giang capital; check the provincial portal for the current seat. Cao Lanh, Sa Dec, My Tho and Cai Be all remain place names; the former Cai Be district is now part of Dong Thap.

Coming up: Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village festival
The provincial tourism portal announced the 7th Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient Village Culture and Tourism Festival for 19–22 November 2026 in Cai Be commune, under a plan signed by the provincial People's Committee. The programme lists visits to the old houses, craft villages, folk games, making banh tet, a floating-market display and river performances, an evening opening with fireworks on 19 November, and a seminar on conserving old houses at the Ba Duc house the next day.

Tram Chim: where the sources disagree
The provincial portal gives Tram Chim National Park an area of 7,313 ha, places it in Tram Chim commune about 40 km from central Cao Lanh, and lists it as open 07:00–18:00 with free admission. A travel guide updated in January 2026 instead quotes a VND 20,000 entry fee and per-boat prices for the two boat routes, since boats are the only way into the park interior. Sources differ; confirm on arrival.
Tram Chim became Vietnam's fourth Ramsar site, and the world's 2,000th, in 2012. Sarus cranes are being reintroduced: in June 2026 the park received six more birds from Thailand, bringing the total brought to the park to twelve. Flood season, September to December, is the time for scenery; cranes, where present, are more likely between January and May.

Sa Dec flowers and the festival
Flower and ornamental growing covers about 950 ha around Sa Dec ward, according to Bao Chinh phu in December 2025. The second Sa Dec Flower and Ornamental Plant Festival ran from 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, and the craft was recognised as national intangible cultural heritage at its opening. The first festival ran from 30 December 2023 to 5 January 2024. The village is busiest in the weeks before Tet, when growers sell their crop.

Cai Be floating market: sources differ
Many tour pages still offer the Cai Be floating market. Al Jazeera wrote in February 2025 that it had closed for good in 2021 (placing it, wrongly, in Ben Tre); Sai Gon Giai Phong found "a few boats" still trading in June 2023, after farmers had switched to trucks. We cannot confirm either way for 2026. If a trip is sold around Cai Be's market, ask the company what you will actually see.

When these links will not help
The portal's place pages are descriptive and rarely dated; a page may show prices or hours that have since changed, as the Tram Chim example shows. Use them to identify the place and its official name, then confirm practical details with the site or a recent report.
The portal is also weak on the river itself. Boat services on the Tien River, and the islet trips from My Tho, are run by private operators and travel companies; for those, go to the tour companies page.

Common questions
Questions readers send
Is My Tho in Dong Thap now?
Yes. Tien Giang merged into Dong Thap on 1 July 2025, so My Tho and the former Cai Be district are now in Dong Thap province.
Does Tram Chim charge an entrance fee?
Sources differ. The provincial portal lists free admission, while a guide updated in January 2026 quotes a VND 20,000 entry fee plus boat charges. Confirm at the gate.
When is the Sa Dec flower festival?
The two editions so far ran over the New Year: 30 December 2023 to 5 January 2024, and 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. Watch the provincial tourism portal for the next one.
